Savoury Muffins

Recently our Asilo Bilingual Child Care & Learning Centre’s Kindy and Toddler friends became little chefs and helped create savoury muffins to enjoy for afternoon tea.

“The children helped identify the different ingredients, mixed them together and then spooned the mixture into the tray,” says Centre Manager Grace Monastra.

“Such great conversations were had at the table about healthy foods that the children and educators enjoy both at Asilo and at home as part of the centre’s Healthy Food Program.”

The children looked like they had so much fun, we thought we would share the recipe with you all.

Serves 18-20.

Ingredients:

  • 50g ham, roughly chopped

  • ½ cup grated zucchini

  • 1 cup self raising flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 eggs

  • ½ cup grated cheddar cheese

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 170 degrees celsius (fan forced.)

  2. Place all ingredients into  large bowl and mix.

  3. If mixture is too dry, add a bit more milk.

  4. Divide the mixture between a 12 hole muffin tin (only fill each hole half way.)

  5. Bake until golden brown and you can pass a cake tester through without batter on the blade.

Questions to ask on your family centre tour

When touring childcare centres for the first time it can be overwhelming.

As the saying goes, ‘first impressions’ count, but taking the time to ask deeper questions and really find out what your early education and childcare centre has to offer you and your child will always be time well spent.
